Dr. Sergio Manuel Alcocer Martínez de Castro

Sergio Alcocer is a researcher at the Engineering Institute of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). He is the Founder and President of Mexico Exponencial, a strategic think tank for the development of policies and strategies on the incorporation of exponential technologies in Mexico. He was Under Secretary of Energy Planning and Technological Development at the Energy Secretariat and Assistant Secretary for North America at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was Secretary General, Innovation and Development Coordinator and Director of UNAM’s Institute of Engineering. He is a member of the Advisory Committee on Structural Security in Mexico City. Mr. Alcocer is a Foreign Member of the United States Academy of Engineering. He is a past President and Honorary Member of the Mexican Society of Structural Engineering (SMIE) and past President of the Engineering Academy of Mexico. He is a member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences, Vice President of the Association of Civil Engineers of Mexico and a member of the Board of Directors at Fundación ICA. He has been an independent director of the ICA Company. In 2017 he received an Honoris Causa Doctorate in Science from the University of Arizona. In 2001 he received a National University Distinction for Young Scholars in the area of Technological Innovation and Industrial Design, and the Research Award of the Mexican Academy of Sciences in the area of Technological Research. In 2007 he received the Structural Engineering Award in Housing from the Mexican Society of Structural Engineering. In 2015 he was appointed as Distinguished Alumnus of the School of Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. Mr. Alcocer is an active member in several technical societies, such as the American Concrete Institute, the Seismic Engineering Research Institute, the International Association on Bridges and Structural Engineering and the International Concrete Federation. Mr. Alcocer is a Civil Engineer from the School of Engineering, UNAM, and an Engineering Doctor by the University of
Texas at Austin.
